Brow Waxing Myths: What's True and What's Not

Brow waxing has been around forever, but we still hear the same misconceptions from clients all the time. Here are the most common myths, and the honest truth behind each one.

Myth 1: Waxing Makes Hair Grow Back Thicker

This is by far the most common myth. The truth is the opposite. Consistent waxing actually weakens the hair follicle over time, which can lead to thinner, less dense regrowth. Hair never grows back thicker than it was before. View all our brow services on our service page.

Myth 2: It Is Too Painful

Most clients say it is much less painful than they expected. The waxing portion takes just a few minutes and the discomfort is brief. We use a sensitive wax that grips the hair without aggressively pulling at the skin.

If you are very sensitive to pain, we have a few tricks. Taking a pain reliever 30 minutes before, avoiding caffeine that day, and skipping waxing the week of your cycle all help.

Myth 3: Waxing Will Pull All My Hair Out

Only the hair outside your mapped shape gets waxed. We do not wax inside the body of your brow shape. Everything in your shape stays and continues to grow naturally.

For a full look at how we map your brows, read our What Is Brow Mapping and Why Does It Matter post.

Myth 4: Tweezing Is Just as Good

Tweezing is great for individual stray hairs but cannot replace the precision and efficiency of a professional brow wax. We use both methods together. For a deeper dive, read our Brow Waxing vs Tweezing: Why Waxing Wins post.

Myth 5: I Cannot Wax If I Use Retinol

You can wax, you just need to pause your retinol use for 48 to 72 hours before your appointment. Active skincare ingredients make your skin more delicate and sensitive to waxing, so giving it a break helps prevent irritation.

After your appointment, you can resume retinol 24 hours later.

Myth 6: Waxing Causes Wrinkles

This one comes up sometimes. The truth? Brief, controlled waxing does not cause wrinkles. The skin returns to normal within minutes. Long term skin health is much more affected by sun exposure, smoking, and skipping moisturizer than by waxing.

Myth 7: It Is Only for Women

Brow waxing is for anyone. Men book brow waxes regularly for cleaner shape, defined lines, and overall polish. We tailor the shape to whatever feels right for you.

Myth 8: Once You Start, You Cannot Stop

You can absolutely stop waxing anytime. Your brows will grow back to their natural state. There is no commitment or downside to taking a break.

Most clients continue because they love the consistent shape and polish, not because they feel forced to.

Myth 9: Brow Wax Pricing Should Be Cheap

A great brow wax involves more than just removing hair. It includes consultation, brow mapping, custom shaping, the wax itself, tweezing, and aftercare. View our service pricing on our service page.

Myth 10: Teens Cannot Get Brow Waxes

Teens can absolutely get brow waxes. We require a parent or guardian to be present for clients under 16 and a consent form must be signed.

This is actually a great service for teens who want to feel confident about their brows without the risk of DIY tweezing damage.

Myth 11: All Wax Is the Same

Not even close. We use a sensitive wax specifically chosen for facial waxing. It works on all skin types including sensitive skin and has lower temperatures than body wax.

Lower quality wax can cause more pain, more redness, and more irritation. Skill and product both matter.

Myth 12: You Cannot Wax During Pregnancy

You absolutely can. Some clients notice increased sensitivity, but the service itself is safe. We adjust our approach if needed and use extra calming products after.
