Why Prep Matters

Your lips need to be healthy, hydrated, and ready to receive pigment. Skipping prep can lead to uneven healing, faded color, or longer recovery. View all our permanent makeup services on our service page.

Two Weeks Before

  • Stop using retinol products on or near the lips

  • No chemical peels or aggressive exfoliation in the lip area

  • Skip any lip exfoliating products

  • Start drinking extra water for hydrated lips

  • Begin a moisturizing lip balm routine

Four Weeks Before

  • Avoid lip fillers (wait at least 4 weeks before lip blush)

  • Skip Botox in the area around the mouth

  • Plan around any major events (give yourself 4 weeks before the event)

One Week Before

  • Stop using any active skincare ingredients on the lip area

  • Continue lip balm use to keep lips hydrated

  • Avoid sun exposure on the lips

  • Skip waxing the upper lip

48 to 72 Hours Before

  • Avoid alcohol (it can increase bleeding and swelling)

  • Skip blood thinners like aspirin, ibuprofen, or fish oil (with doctor approval)

  • No caffeine the morning of (also a blood thinner)

  • Stay extra hydrated

  • Get good sleep

The Day Before

  • Eat well and stay hydrated

  • Apply lip balm throughout the day

  • Plan for soft, easy foods for the next few days

  • Stock up on aftercare supplies (extra balm, clean towels)

  • Get a good night's sleep

The Day Of

  • Eat a full meal before your appointment

  • Avoid caffeine

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Bring a hair tie or headband if you have long hair

  • Come with clean lips (no lipstick or balm right before)

  • Bring inspiration photos if you have specific color goals

  • Bring a sweater or light jacket (lying still can get cold)

  • Allow extra time so you are not rushed

What to Wear

Wear comfortable clothing you do not mind sitting in for a couple hours. We recommend:

  • Something soft and breathable

  • Layers in case you get cold

  • Hair pulled back or easy to manage

  • Minimal makeup (you may bump your face during the service)

Medical Considerations

Before booking, let us know if you:

  • Are pregnant or nursing (we do not perform during pregnancy or nursing)

  • Are taking blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder

  • Have a history of cold sores (we can recommend antiviral prep)

  • Have any allergies to common pigments

  • Have certain skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis on the lip area)

  • Have had recent injectables in the lip or face area

Cold Sore Prevention

If you have a history of cold sores, the trauma of the procedure can trigger an outbreak. We recommend talking to your doctor about a preventive antiviral medication starting a few days before your appointment. This dramatically reduces the chance of an outbreak.

Mental and Emotional Prep

Lip blush is a process. Mental prep helps too:

  • Know that the day of color will look bolder than the final result

  • Be prepared for the healing process (it takes 2 to 4 weeks)

  • Trust the process even during the panic phase (days 5 to 7)

  • Plan around any social events
