What to Expect at Your Permanent Makeup Consultation

Every permanent makeup service we offer starts with a consultation. This is where we make sure PMU is right for you, plan your service carefully, and answer every question you have. If you have booked your consultation and are wondering what to expect, this is your complete walkthrough.

First visit at The Beauty Room and Co beauty studio in Round Rock Texas

Why We Require Consultations for PMU

Unlike most of our services, permanent makeup requires planning. Color matching, shape mapping, health considerations, and emotional readiness all matter. The consultation is where we slow down and get everything right before the actual appointment. View all our PMU services on our service page.

Skipping this step would mean rushing into a service that lasts 2 to 5 years. We never want that for our clients.

Who Performs Your Consultation

All PMU consultations and services are done with Lori, our owner and PMU specialist. She has the training, experience, and artistic eye to plan a service that flatters your unique features.

To learn more about Lori and our team, read our Meet the Team Behind The Beauty Room & Co post.

Before Your Consultation

To prepare:

  • Bring inspiration photos that show looks you love

  • Come with clean skin (no makeup on the area we are discussing)

  • Think about your daily routine and what you want to simplify

  • Write down any questions or concerns ahead of time

  • Be ready to share health background honestly

When You Arrive

We welcome you to the studio and get you settled. If this is your first time at our studio, you fill out a quick client form. Then we head back to our consultation space to start.

For more on visiting our studio for the first time, read our What to Expect at Your First Visit to The Beauty Room & Co post.

Step One: The Conversation

We start by talking. Lori asks about:

  • Why you are considering PMU

  • Your goals for the service

  • Your daily makeup routine (what you do and what you wish you did not have to)

  • Your style preferences (bold or soft, natural or defined)

  • Any past PMU experiences (good or bad)

  • Your timeline (are you preparing for an event, taking your time, etc)

This is the time to share everything. The more we understand, the better the plan we can create.

Step Two: Looking at Inspiration

If you brought photos, we look at them together. We discuss what you like about each one and which elements would translate well to your features.

Not every photo will work for your face. Lori will be honest about what is achievable and what would need to be adapted. The goal is always to give you the best version of your features, not someone else's.

Step Three: Health and Safety Review

Lori reviews your client form and asks about:

  • Any medications you are taking

  • Allergies or sensitivities

  • Recent injectables (Botox or filler)

  • Skin conditions in the area

  • History of cold sores (for lip blush)

  • Pregnancy, nursing, or trying to conceive

  • Autoimmune conditions

  • Use of blood thinners

Some clients will need to wait or get clearance from their doctor before booking. We are always honest if PMU is not the right fit at this time.

Step Four: Shape Mapping

For brow services, this is where Lori uses the string method to map your brow shape. We measure your features, find your three key points (start, peak, end), and mark a plan for your brows.

For more on the brow mapping process, read our What Is Brow Mapping and Why It Matters post.

For lip blush, Lori maps your natural lip shape and discusses any adjustments to create the look you want.

For eyeliner, we map the line shape along your lash line.

For lash enhancement, we plan the placement of pigment between your lashes.

Step Five: Color Matching

Choosing the right color is one of the most important parts of the consultation. Lori looks at:

  • Your hair color

  • Your skin tone and undertone

  • Your natural feature color (your existing brow hair, lip color, etc)

  • The style you are going for

She then presents pigment options and discusses how each one will heal. We always go slightly softer than you might expect because pigment looks bolder day of and softens as it heals.

Step Six: The Plan

By the end of the consultation, we have a clear plan that includes:

  • Which PMU service is right for you

  • Your chosen color

  • Your chosen shape or design

  • Your appointment date

  • Pre care instructions for before your appointment

  • What to expect during your service

  • Expected healing timeline

For full pre care details specifically for lip blush, read our How to Prep for Your Lip Blush Appointment post.

Step Seven: Questions and Concerns

This is your time to ask anything. Common questions clients ask:

  • Does it hurt?

  • What if I do not like it?

  • How will it look right after?

  • Can I exercise during healing?

  • Will it affect future Botox or filler?

  • What if I want to change my mind later?

  • How long is the appointment?

  • Can my partner come with me?

No question is too small. PMU is a meaningful investment, and we want you to feel fully informed.

How Long Is the Consultation?

Plan for about 10 to 15 minutes. It is a focused conversation, not a long appointment. We move efficiently but never rush through anything important.

Cost

Consultations are free. There is no commitment to book after the consultation either. If you decide PMU is not right for you, that is completely fine. View our service pricing on our service page.

Booking Your Service

If you decide to move forward, we book your appointment at the end of the consultation. Some things to know:

  • Most clients book 2 to 4 weeks out

  • Bridal clients and special event prep should book 6 to 8 weeks ahead minimum

  • Your initial appointment plus the included 6 to 8 week touch up are scheduled together

  • A deposit may be required for permanent makeup services

What If You Are Not Ready to Book?

That is completely okay. Some clients leave consultations excited to schedule. Others want to think it over. Both are fine.

If you need time, just let us know. We will give you all the info you need to make a confident decision when you are ready.

What If PMU Is Not Right for You?

Sometimes during consultation, we determine that PMU is not the best fit. Reasons might include:

  • A health condition that makes it unsafe

  • Goals that would be better served by another service

  • Timing concerns (pregnancy, nursing, recent injectables)

  • A look you want that is not achievable with PMU

If that is the case, Lori will recommend alternatives. We might suggest brow lamination instead of microblading, lash lift instead of lash enhancement, or other options that better fit your goals.

For more on the choices, read our How to Choose the Right Brow Service for Your Face Shape post.

After Your Consultation

You leave with:

  • A clear plan for your service

  • Confidence in what to expect

  • Pre care instructions to follow before your appointment

  • Lori's recommendations specific to you

  • Time to think it over if you need it

You can always reach out with follow up questions between consultation and your service appointment.

Why Consultation Matters So Much

Some clients ask if they can skip the consultation. Here is why we will not let you:

  • PMU lasts 2 to 5 years. Getting it right matters.

  • Color matching cannot be rushed.

  • Shape mapping needs time.

  • Health considerations protect you.

  • Trust between you and Lori starts at consultation.

This is one step you will be glad you did not skip.
